Reflecting on the End of an Era: Saying Goodbye to Nintendo 3DS and Celebrating Its Legacy

The 3DS online services officially shut down after 13 years.
by Natalie Collazo on April 10, 2024

After 13 years of fun, the Nintendo 3DS online services were shut down officially as of Monday, April 8, 2024. The eShop closed a year prior to that, but you were still able to play with friends online despite that. Fans are still able to play with each other locally, but the end of the console has officially come.

The Nintendo 3DS was one of Nintendo's greatest handhelds. While the 3D features were pretty bogus, that didn't stop developers from making incredibly memorable experiences. There are even some rereleases that came out on the handheld that are better than the versions on any other platform. Why? The console has the potential to do so much more than anything else it competed with could.

Looking Back At the Nintendo 3DS's Heyday

The States got the Nintendo 3DS a month after it was released in Japan. From the beginning, it was a hit with launch titles like Super Street Fighter IV, Super Monkey Ball 3D, and Rayman 3D. That popularity only skyrocketed with the release of more niche and exclusive titles like Bravely Default and the ever-popular Pokemon games. There are even titles like Resident Evil: Revelations that started out as a 3DS title only to gain a fan following that justified a multi-platform release years later.

As the years progressed, new iterations or collector's editions of the 3DS became common announcements at Nintendo Directs. You can only imagine how expensive some of these could be now. Department stores would have entire lines outside on launch day for some of these just because scalpers wanted to get their hands on an edition that they just knew would never be available again. At some point, even a children-friendly version called the 2DS was released.

With a replaceable, micro SD memory card, players could add more memory and be able to download a variety of games from the eShop. There are even some games that were exclusive to the eShop. Even popular titles like Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies. For similar games that could only have been accessed in the eShop, they were officially gone as of March last year. Now, you're only able to reinstall games you own.

What Happens Next?

It's interesting to see a community come together to help one another with homebrewing their 3DSs to help preserve their favorite games. If you haven't noticed, there's been a rise in content surrounding the top recently. You might not be able to play online with your friends anymore as of Monday, but you can still enjoy your favorite 3DS and DS titles thanks to the power of the internet.
