Nintendo Switch Online Expands SNES Library with Three New Titles

Excited yet?
by Joe Wilcock on April 12, 2024

Nintendo Switch Online has expanded its library of SNES games, adding three new titles for players to enjoy: Wrecking Crew ’98, Super R-Type, and Amazing Heberke.

Wrecking Crew ’98, originally released exclusively in Japan in 1998, offers players two versions of the classic game. Players can control Mario as they navigate through levels, destroying walls and ladders while dodging enemies. The Super Famicom version introduces a competitive element, where players must destroy and arrange panels to line up matching colors to launch attacks on opponents.

Super R-Type is a side-scrolling shooter featuring seven challenging stages where players battle hordes of enemies and collect power-ups to aid them in their mission.

Amazing Heberke is a top-down battle royale game where players compete with up to four characters in a winner-take-all contest. Each character can perform special attacks in addition to their normal attacks, using items and traps strategically to secure victory.

Despite the addition of these new titles, some players may still question the value of the Nintendo Switch Online subscription, priced at $20 per year. While the service offers benefits such as online access and cloud saves, the slow pace of game releases may leave subscribers feeling underwhelmed.

Nintendo Switch Online boasts a library of 63 SNES games, 21 Game Boy games, and 71 NES games. However, the inability to download games directly to the system and the dated nature of many titles may deter some players from fully engaging with the service.

For those willing to invest more, the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack option, priced at $50 per year, offers additional perks including 30 N64 games, 14 Sega Genesis titles, and 15 Game Boy Advance games. However, the absence of certain first-party GBA titles may disappoint some subscribers.

Overall, while the addition of new SNES games to the Nintendo Switch Online library may provide some entertainment value, the service’s offerings may still leave some players wanting more, particularly in terms of variety and accessibility.
