Escape From Tarkov Devs Reverse PvE Mode Misstep

PvE mode will be free!
by Tit Krajnik on April 28, 2024

Escape from Tarkov developers have recently faced a lot of criticism following a controversial announcement of the game's Unheard Edition. This is mainly due to the hefty price of $250 for the DLC that unlocks the PvE mode, essentially paywalling the game's new feature.

Escape from Tarkov devs have recently announced a new, exciting PvE mode; however, while the mode itself was accepted well by the playerbase, no one agreed with the course devs took with offering it. When announced, the PvE mode was said only to be available to those who purchase the premium $250 edition of the game – which sparked controversy, the devs quickly addressed.

Escape From Tarkov Devs Promise the PvE Mode Will be Free

The jaw-dropping $250 price tag on the Unheard Edition, which includes unique weapons, enhanced stash, and other extras, wouldn't be as controversial if it also hadn't included the exclusive PvE mode, which would only be available to those who purchase the Unheard Edition.

To make matters worse, this announcement especially angered Escape From Tarkov players who previously purchased the now-delisted Edge of Darkness edition, which at the time promised access to all future DLCs and older content.

The misstep sparked a huge controversy that Developer Battlestate Games addressed very quickly, promising that the new offline PvE mode would be available to all players for only six months. This again didn't sit well with Edge of Darkness owners, who received a response that the PvE mode is not a DLC but a new feature.

Battlestate Games studio head Nik Buyanov addressed the concerns in a Reddit post, where he attempted to explain the decision. He doubled down on Unheard Edition's definition as a feature and not a DLC, but after more backlash, he decided to change the course.

In the latest post, Buyanov went back on the idea and stated that the PvE access would be given to all Edge of Darkness owners free of charge. Another positive announcement is that the PvE mode will come with mod support after the release of the fuill game and that there will be EoD perks balancing.

"We observe your dissatisfaction and have decided that the functionality of the PvE mode will be available for free to all owners of the EoD version at the release of the game when the server infrastructure will be improved to the required capacity."

Despite the backlash, the $250 Unheard Edition will remain in the store and will remain available for those who want to support the game more.
